Rings of smoke rose from Raoul's pipe, coming out rhythm-like one after another. This was his peace time; his zen; once the child was asleep. Not that Raoul minded little Kate, but it seemed now as though his only quiet time was once his cousin went to sleep. He felt horribly guilty for spending part of their precious money on a smoking tool but the man had sort of developed a tolerance to tobacco. If he didn't get in a smoke Raoul would cough and wheeze until he couldn't breathe anymore. He never smoked around the child, for it was noxious for someone her age to be breathing it in. For Raoul it wasn't any better. Could he give a crap? No. If he died, then so be it. In the past few months, Raoul realized you just had to life your life. And that crap happened. If his time came, he'd be ready. But then again, Kate would be alone.
While a smoke ring rose into the night sky, there was a pool of drool on the ground, belonging to the enormous saint bernard seated next to the former king. The stupid mutt ate like a flock of vultures and his slobber and barking were a nuisance. Dogs were never in his favor back in Archenland. Raoul however found he liked this dog for that reason. They'd had many saints and other similar dogs there; they were valued for their ability to climb the rocky terrain of his country, and ability to withstand its rough winters. This mongrel he'd come across in town owner less. While strolling, the dog wouldn't stop following the King. He figured Kate would need a guard while he wasn't home and let the mutt come with him. A saint bernard didn't seem like the greatest guard dog with his gentle demeanor. For an intruder, he'd be intimidating to look at. If you didn't know the breed that was."Inside", he growled to the dog after releasing another puff. The mutt padded into the house quickly at the command. This dog knew who his king was, his master. Perhaps that was why he'd followed him. Raoul would be joining him soon; he'd heard things in town...that some of the Witches followers still roamed the woods; you were advised to lock your door and windows after dark. The former King set his pipe on a tree stump and went to the nearby river. Cool water felt nice in this humidity. Once he knelt down, Raoul nearly jumped at the reflection. Where had the time gone? Once he'd been twenty five and the women threw themselves at him. He'd once been adored. Now if he was with Kate it was "Your daughter is adorable!" When he'd been alone, Raoul lost track of time. Now he was almost what? Thirty? Twenty nine? A face splash wasn't enough; no crime in going for a swim, right? He peeled off his shirt and jumped in the refreshing water.
